Krakal Kecil is Closed

Dear friends and visitors,
I'm so sorry to tell you that our gorgeous island  resort is now closed.
The Karimunjawa Marine Park is such a beautiful place - I highly recommend that you take the journey and enjoy your time there.
The ferry timetable changes quite frequently and seasonally so make sure you update your information before you plan to arrive in either Semarang or Jepara.
Enjoy your adventure because that's what its all about.
Kind regards,
Amanda

Karimunjawa Resort News

It looks like things are moving ahead in our simple resort in the Karimunjawa Archipelago. The first island we are developing is Krakal Kecil.

Accommodation

We have 5 bungalows ready now which can sleep up to 10 people. Things are changing fast though and we expect to have more bungalows completed by the end of the year.

There is a toilet and shower but we will have an extra toilet and a separate shower ready by the end of the month.

Food

There is a separate kitchen/dining bungalow with our Indonesian staff trained in simple but authentic Italian home cooking as well as cooking good nasi goreng or grilled fish.

We supply the basics like fresh water, rice, pasta, eggs, fresh vegetables, fruits and fish.

For Fun

We have one speed boat, one Balinese style boat and access to loads of local boats.

Fishing trips can be arranged with locals who know these waters intimately.

We are an excellent base for dive trips. The corals and sea life are amazing. Since we are only new, we don't have any dive groups staying on the island yet but we are open to anyone who wants to come and stay. Just send me your enquiries by email.

One of our friends, Peter of No Roads Expeditions might start up kayaking tours in 2009. Check out his fabulous website - its so inspiring.
The Karimunjawa archipelago is a lovely spot to add to your sailing itinerary. You are always welcome to drop anchor and enjoy a barbecue, watch Italian TV or just hang out. Please let us know a couple of days in advance, especially if you'd like to stay and enjoy some food with us.

Google Earth side bar directions

An Italian friend was just up in the islands and I'm waiting for his photos so I can post them.
In the meantime I added a map from Google Earth to the sidebar. I hope that you find it interesting, at least you can place the islands now if you haven't been there yet.
The islands are to the north of Semarang, you can keep zooming in till you get there.

Its of marathon ocean swimmer Monte Monfore swimming 45 miles in Karimunjawa national park to raise awareness of the survivors of the Jogjakarta earthquake of a couple of years ago.
Hope you enjoy it.

KARIMUNJAWA RESORTS

Welcome to Karimunjawa.

Here you can chart the development of our resorts in the Karimunjawa Marine National Park in the Java Sea, Indonesia.

The Karimunjawa archipelago consists of 27 islands off the north east coast of Java accessible from either Semarang or Jepara by ferry or speed boat. The island chain of
110,000 hectacres lies 83 kilometres north west of Jepara in Central Java.

Of these 27 islands we are developing 5 at this time. They will be ecologically sensitive resorts of various qualities - from backpackers simple huts on the beach to luxury 5 star resort and spa. You will be able to book an entire island for you and your friends to have a fabulous celebratory holiday or stay on a larger island and meet fellow travellers who love going places that no-one else has been.

The islands are ringed by sparkling white sand beaches teeming with over 240 varieties of fish, turtles, crabs, starfish, 35 types of coral and birds all of which are protected within the marine park. Mangroves line part of the shores on some islands and serve as breeding grounds for the abundant sea life.

The best time to visit the islands is from April through to October however you may want to visit us from November to March but expect wind and stronger seas.

History:

The islands of the Karimunjawa Archipelago were used as a pirate base in the past, a safe haven for the legendary Bugis who still ply the waters of the archipelago. Now these fearsome Bugis are gentle fishermen who sail up to your boat and offer you fresh, delicious fish in return for a small amount of Indonesian Rupiah.

Getting there:
There are direct flights to Semarang from Singapore, Jakarta, Bali and Jogjakarta. Kura Kura Resort offers charter flights from Jogjakarta, Semarang and Bali to Karimunjawa on request. The ferries for Karimunjawa leave from either Jepara or Semarang 3 times a week and we have speed boats avaiable on request.

What to do when you get here:

Diving, snorkling, fishing, hiking and swimming:
There are so many
gorgeous brightly coloured fishes in these crystal clear warm coral waters of the Karimunjawa Archipelago.

The reefs are a mixture of fringing, barrier, and patch with bottom depths ranging from 5 to 40 meters and don't forget the shipwrecks! There are at least 3 shipwrecks since these islands were in the path of the trading ships to and from mainland China. Not being Padi trained I love to snorkel and I can assure you that because the water is so clear, snorkling is sufficient to enjoy the sea life.

Eating:
We usually sail out to the fishermen or they come in to us when they know we are on the islands, and buy delicious fresh fish. My favourite is the local snapper and the red snapper but my friends swear by the parrot fish - you be the judge.

Hows that for my first post? Will follow with loads of great photos.
